During 2009, the UK Parliament celebrated the 150th anniversary of its world famous Clock Tower, Great Clock and Great Bell.

The name Big Ben is often used to describe the tower, the clock and the bell but the name was first given to the Great Bell. 1859 was the beginning for all three elements when the Clock Tower was completed, the Great Clock started on 31 May and the Great Bell’s chimes were heard for the first time on 11 July.

Have your iPhone (or iPod Touch) display the time of day in style.

Options include:

adding a digital clock display
showing a seconds hand
having it make a tick-tock sound
having it chime every quarter of an hour and toll on the hour (the chiming and tolling sounds will play even when the app is not open, so long as your device is not muted and you allow notifications in the General Settings for Big Ben)

Pointless? Maybe. Decorative? Certainly.

NB Sounds will only play through earphones on 1st gen iPod Touch.

Thanks to all who left comments and suggestions for improvement. In particular to Dave, whose persistence finally motivated us to release this new version.

Pros and cons of Big Ben app for iPhone and iPad

Big Ben app good for

Let me rectify my shot with my "False representation" review. Turns out I hadnt given the app the time to fully deploy its components and get fully working, as happens often with Apple iDevice apps. Because after missing two straight quarterhours, the app started working fine, even while inactive (or "killed"), and hasnt missed a single chime since. So I should have waited to post my review! It works just as specified. So no, dont turn away from it. It is sure worth its price. And, Im also extremely satisfied with the sound quality. The volume is not adjustable, but it sounds at just the right level, loud and clear enough to be well heard yet never too loud as to disturb or to grab the attention of the people around you. The sound is great, and not tinny at all in my iPod touchs tinny speaker. In the earphones, it greatly replicates the heavy yet soft iron bells sound. And when its a bit noisy, it will sound so softly out the speaker like a clock tower chiming in the distance. This app also comes with a great clock display that works, and the 4th quarterhour even starts early to make BigBen strike on the hour, unlike other mobile Big Ben apps. On the clock though, the hands appear a bit pale (esp. on the daytime clock), and when theyre together, the hour hand appears on top, while its actually under. But these are very minor imperfections, and overall, kudos for a mobile app very well done!
Nice work. Well worth the dollar I spent. Can you make it chime on the hour and half hour? It gives me a taste of seeing the real thing later this year. Thanks again
Cute app, and congrats to our UK friends for this big anniversary!
i really like this app. i cant wait for the quarter hour chimes to come out!!
But I will rate five stars if you have where display the weather in back or something to go with where I live and if you can adjust the volume. The weather would be cool but if thats not a possibility I will take the volume
An app that just has an image of Big Ben and makes clock sounds?!? You bet! This app does exactly what it said it would do. Its a great rendition of Big Ben sights and sounds, which is awesome for those of us who love London. It brings back really nice memories. As an improvement, Id love to have optional pictures of London around Big Ben in both afternoon and evening that could be shown with the sound of the clock in the background. (PS - I get clock sounds even when the app is off, so not sure what the other reviewer was experiencing. Maybe due to different versions of iOS. )

Some bad moments

could be great if only the bell was chiming automatically on the hour when the application is not launched ! a bit useless if not ...
By far the most useless app I have yet seen on the App Store. Utterly useless. Good thing I got it for free.
It only works when the application is open and does not work when the phone is asleep so whats the use of it? just look at it when the hour is getting close to hear the chimes? what a rip off
